I have been in recruitment, specifically legal recruitment since 1990, when I assisted in setting up Garfield Robbins with a friend before buying out my partner at GR Law in 2001. I have been based in London and Sydney, where we have offices, and placed with clients in Europe, the CIS, Asia, the Middle East, Australasia and North America. I have run my businesses through two/three recessions and thankfully through boom times as well but the factors that have guided us through are integrity and innovation. For example we were using video conferencing in the late 1990s, long before Skype. Technology was once a threat to recruitment, it is now a tool. The AWR could be a threat but we have to adapt and turn these changes to our benefit. We have many of the same clients and staff since we set up and I believe it is essential to build long term, quality relationships. These are only possible if we care about the way in which we deliver our services. We have occasionally lost fees to competitors who have behaved unethically and picked up clients at their expense. That would be fine but unethical, immoral or illegal practices damage the whole industry. With the industry under increasing pressure on fees driving up standards and innovation seems the obvious way to go and certainly more fun than bargain basement recruitment! |
