APSCo Charity Ball - 27th November 2009

APSCo’s 10th annual charity ball was held on Friday 27th November at The Intercontinental in Park Lane, London in aid of ChildLine. The charity ball was sponsored by 1st Option, the specialist accountancy practice for contractors, and attended by almost 500 guests from the professional staffing industry.

This year’s event had a ‘Venetian masked ball theme’ which saw the guests don elaborate Venetian masks before being greeted by singing gondoliers (complete with gondolas). The main ballroom was hung with silk drapes and strewn with exotic ostrich feathers in purple, orange and green. Venetian statues were on display to complete the ambience.

The after-dinner events included a disco, casino and karaoke as well as a champagne diamond draw and silent auction before the main charity auction hosted by Christies.

The lots auctioned by Christies included a Caribbean holiday, donated by Thomas International, which was picked up by Peter Flaherty, one of the original founders of APSCo. Originally supposed to be seven days, Thomas International generously donated an extra week for free. Other lots included a three-night stay in a five star hotel in Venice, a two-day cruise on a luxury yacht in the South of France, and a long weekend in Boston, USA.

The champagne diamond draw (sponsored by Broadbean) was won by the holder of ticket number 34 – Paul Shrimpton of Parasol.  The wonderful diamond necklace was collected by Ravneet Bermi from Parasol’s sales team.  Paul was absolutely delighted with his win.

The lots making up the silent auction included an original lithograph by Pablo Picasso, an Italian cookery course and match day tickets to see Arsenal and Manchester United.

In total, over £60,000 was raised for ChildLine.

Ann Swain, CEO comments: “This was our tenth charity ball, and despite the economic pressures recruiters faced this year, raised a significant sum of money for ChildLine. It was great to see everyone digging deep. The recession may have dented profit margins but not recruiters’ generosity!”

This was APSCo’s tenth charity ball, and it was also Ann Swain’s 10th anniversary as CEO of APSCo.  Richard Herring, APSCo’s Chairman, presented Ann with an award and gift on behalf of all at APSCo – Richard’s speech was followed by a standing ovation from the members.
